Sometimes after shampooing my scalp gets quite itchy. What could be causing this ?

Maggie: Firstly check that you always rinse your hair thoroughly to ensure there is no residue of shampoo or conditioner left on your scalp as this may cause itching.

Also, if your hair has a build up of styling products which remain in the hair after washing, this may also be the cause of the itching. As much as it irritates you; do try not to scratch your scalp as you may break the skin causing further soreness.

Be wary of shampoos containing Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, a foaming agent used in shampoos, body gels, soaps and bubble baths, as this ingredient dries out the scalp and can cause allergic reactions. Try a natural shampoo and see if this helps the problem.

What's the most effective way to apply conditioner on my hair ?

Heather: Usually conditioner is applied only to the mid length and the ends of the hair – the areas that require the most moisturising. This is because this hair is older and is subjected to heat styling products, brushing, and is constantly exposed to the elements such as sun, wind, rain, snow etc.

The root area has natural oils which will keep it healthy and it also has youth on its side as it is the newest area of your hair; always growing.

Also conditioner which is applied to the scalp often results in hair looking oily and unclean – stick to the mid length and ends only and your hair will look great.
